The Back Story...
Check out the feature on
Trey, which was published in Basketball Times and
on the official website of the National
Association of Basketball Coaches
I went to Marquette
University as the special assistant for Men's
Basketball in September 2001. Shortly thereafter,
I became ill, with what was first thought to be
pneumonia. It turned out to be an incurable lung
disease called IPF. I was told that my only hope
for long-term survival was a double lung
transplant.
I was placed on the waiting list and waited for
approximately two years, until February 17, 2004,
when a matching donor was found. My surgeon, Dr.
Robert Love, and his team performed a seven-hour
operation on me, where both of my diseased lungs
were removed, and replaced with the new lungs from
the donor.
I was very fortunate to receive my transplant.
More than 80,000 people in the United States are
on the transplant waiting lists. Approximately 17
of those people die each day, still waiting for a
transplant that never happened, due to a shortage
of donor organs.
Today, we are asking for your help. If you have
not done so already, please make the decision to
become an organ donor and share your decision with
your family. Your decision can save lives. I am
living proof.
Sincerely,
Trey Schwab
